For this week’s Tilson Tuesdays employee spotlight, meet Caroline Black!
Caroline serves as the Director of GIS on Tilson’s Engineering team. GIS, or Geographical Information Systems, is “data with a location.” GIS is used to analyze and visualize data in relation to physical locations. For the telecom industry, this includes visualizing network designs, mapping utilities, surveying and permitting, tracking construction locations, and more. As Director of GIS, Caroline leads the data management and processes that enable her team to support fiber and wireless projects of all sizes across the country.
Digital mapping is Caroline’s passion, and she loves to learn and discover new ways to solve problems using GIS. She first joined Tilson in 2018 as a GIS Analyst, became GIS Manager in 2022, and was promoted to the Director of GIS role in 2023. This desire to always be learning new things has served her extremely well in the fast-paced and ever-changing landscape of telecom.
“I am privileged to work with really smart and fun people who are focused on supporting each other first and foremost,” Caroline said about her time at Tilson. “The trust and encouragement that was given to me at Tilson has given me opportunities I did not expect to have when I joined five years ago. They promote internal growth and I am testament to that.”
Outside of work, Caroline is kept busy with her two young boys. They are often found at the park, the local playground, or on outdoor adventures together.
Fun fact: Caroline is originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland, studied and worked in GIS in both Northern Ireland and Scotland, and now resides in Maine near Tilson’s Portland headquarters.
You have been an integral part of Tilson’s team over the past five years, Caroline. Thanks for everything you do!
