For this week’s Tilson Tuesdays employee spotlight, meet Alfonso Mendez!
Alfonso is the Outside Plant (OSP) Safety Manager for Tilson’s Las Vegas market. Safety is Tilson’s number one core value and Alfonso exemplifies this in his day-to-day work. As OSP Safety Manager, Alfonso ensures field crews have the tools and knowledge to perform their work safely and he is responsible for new hire onboarding and safety training, reviewing and implementing Tilson safety policies, and responding to any safety-related concerns.
One of Alfonso’s favorite aspects of the job is working together as a team to overcome new challenges. For example, the Las Vegas area is the first of Tilson’s markets to use microtrenching, which utilizes sophisticated equipment to create narrow cuts in the ground for installing high-speed fiber cable. This process allows crews to install fiber quickly with minimal disruption to the surrounding area. Alfonso was a key part of the team that helped us safely prepare and deploy this new technology in the field.
When not at work, Alfonso enjoys outdoor activities and spending time with his family. He has six kids and three grandchildren, so there is never a dull moment. Alfonso moved to Las Vegas from Guadalajara, Mexico, when he was nine years old and still cheers for the Aguilas Del America soccer team in Mexico. He is also a Minnesota Vikings fan. Going to the beach is his go-to activity when he finds time to relax.
Fun fact: Alfonso is a great cook and can cook just about anything. He especially loves eating seafood and enjoying a refreshing carajillo (a Mexican coffee cocktail).
Tilson is fortunate to have you on the team, Alfonso, and we appreciate your commitment to the safety of our employees.
