For this week’s special intern edition of #tilsontuesdays, meet Nick Weaver!
Nick joined Tilson over the summer as part of our App Development and Operations team where he and his teammates worked on an AI chatbot project. As a Data Science major at Penn State with an interest in telecom, Nick said his internship at Tilson was “the perfect storm of everything I hoped to work on.” The chatbot project gave Nick real life opportunities to learn a variety of software programs along with experience managing and querying databases.
While Nick’s internship is coming to an end, his impact on Tilson lives on. The chatbot he and his team built is now a Teams app for Tilson employees. It integrates multiple sources of data to provide an AI experience to ask questions and get answers about telecom terminology, employee contact information, and current Tilson projects. With time, additional functionality will be added using the strong foundation that Nick and his team created.
“I was really happy to help create a product that will be used after my time here,” Nick said. “I really felt like a valued member of the team.” That sentiment goes both ways with his supervisor Gavin Kelley giving high praise for Nick’s work and attitude, saying “I’m really impressed with his contributions during his internship.”
Nick returns as a junior to Penn State this fall to continue his degree in Data Science. He is considering a career in the telecom industry which would mean our paths may cross again in the future.
“I absolutely loved my time here. Everyone was incredibly encouraging in my goals and helped out whenever I ran into a roadblock,” Nick said about his experience at Tilson. “My internship was more than amazing and it was the best work experience I have had to date!”
In his free time, Nick loves ice hockey. He has played since he was a kid and now coaches youth hockey teams. Growing up near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Nick is a diehard Pittsburgh Penguins. He also finds time to play guitar, video games, rollerblade, and draw. As a massive fan of horror stories and comic books, they are his favorite thing to draw.
Fun fact: Nick loves to tinker with technology and recently completed building a functioning arcade-style video game controller.
It was a pleasure having you on the team this summer. Thanks for all your hard work, Nick, and best of luck in the school year ahead!
