Bangor Daily News
Bangor Publishing Co. is a family-owned newspaper and publishing company under its fourth generation of ownership. It publishes the Bangor Daily News (BDN), which has been Maine’s newspaper of record for well over 100 years and currently employs more than 200 people across Maine. Established in 1889, the company is now in its fourth generation of ownership by the Warren family. Under Publisher Richard J. Warren, the company continues to serve its readers and its advertisers with products that are relevant to the times.
As the newspaper industry has evolved, so has the BDN’s core products. In addition to its daily newspaper, the BDN has expanded its offerings across a broad range of multi-media products and services. The company has had remarkable success in transforming its newsroom and publishing processes. After realizing their financial and reporting systems needed similar innovation, the BDN engaged Tilson as a partner to lead the effort.
Tilson began by analyzing current systems, assessing desired business needs and providing recommendations for process and technology improvements. After collaborating with BDN leadership, Tilson consultants conducted a full-scale system selection, including RFP management, vendor demo coordination, system evaluation and contract negotiation. The resulting system was identified as a basis for immediate and future cost savings, greater work process efficiencies and more effective integration with other business systems within the BDN.
Currently, Tilson consultants are managing the multi-faceted implementation of the selected system including in-depth collaboration with internal BDN subject matter experts. Work has included vendor management, coordinating and advising on change management, business process workshops, system configuration and setup, data analysis and reporting. Both Tilson and BDN are excited at the prospect of the impending go-live and the transformation the new system will bring to both the organization and its readers.
