Washington, DC, April 30, 2014 – The Department of Energy announced today that Gulf of Maine Research Institute's PowerHouse educational energy application is a finalist for best overall application in their Apps for Energy Challenge. This contest is a four-part, year-long Challenge to introduce the public to data and resources offered by the U.S. Department of Energy. The GMRI application, built in partnership with smart grid operator Central Maine Power and technology firm Tilson, is the GMRI’s newest education initiative, engages students directly in math and science learning. Utilizing the rapidly growing network of smart electrical meters in Maine households, PowerHouse enables Maine students and their families to investigate and manage their home electricity use. Students engage in authentic investigations and use evidence-based reasoning about electricity consumption and participate in family discussions about energy use at home. They realize energy management with their families and engage productively in the quest for climate change solutions.
There are four finalists for the First Prize ($25,000) and Second Prize ($12,500) awards for the best overall applications. Winners of the First and Second Prizes will be announced at an event to be held later this Spring in Washington D.C. The finalists are invited to demo their apps at the event. The finalists are:
