Virtual Interview Tips from Tilson’s Recruiting Team

In today’s “new normal,” companies across the country are hiring new employees without ever meeting them in person, and Tilson is no different. We have adapted our hiring and onboarding process to be completely virtual. The goal remains the same, though – to find the most qualified candidates who are also a strong cultural fit.

As a Talent Acquisition Manager at Tilson vetting 100-200 candidates per week, here are my top tips on how to make your online interview a success:

  1. Test your technology: The interview should not be the first time you are logging in with your microphone and camera.  If interviewing with Tilson, your Recruiter would be happy to arrange a time to do a test run with you. The interview should be about you, not about troubleshooting! In addition to checking your microphone and camera, make sure to adjust the lighting and camera angle so we can see you.
  2. “Arrive” early: Even after testing your technology, there may be a hiccup the day/time of the interview. For that reason, treat your virtual interview like an in-person interview and login 5 minutes early to ensure everything is working properly.
  3. Consider your location: If you’re working from home, you likely have family, pets, and a whole orchestra of sounds and distractions. Although sometimes these distractions are inevitable, try to find a quiet room where you won’t be disturbed and find a professional, neutral background.
  4. Stay focused: When you’re not in a conference room or office being interviewed, it can be easy to get distracted and stray from the topic at hand. Make sure you stay laser-focused on the discussion.
  5. Prepare: Write down notes and questions to prepare for your interview. Make sure you research the company and job role thoroughly. If applying to Tilson, be sure to check out our Glassdoor page.
  6. Eye contact: Just like an in-person interview, keep eye contact with the camera.
  7. Dress the part: Business attire is appropriate for interviews, including virtual ones. Be sure to dress for success, even if you spend the rest of the day in your sweatpants.

And there you have it – my top tips on getting hired virtually. If you are a team-player who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, Tilson is hiring nationwide in telecom, IT, engineering, and administration: view our open positions
