For this week’s special intern edition of #tilsontuesdays, meet Svetlana Harrington!
Svetlana is one of 12 university students currently interning with Tilson. Each summer, students from universities across the country join Tilson for a 16-week paid internship experience where they join a team, partner with a mentor, and work on real-time projects. The focus of each intern varies and Tilson invites students to work on a variety of projects including construction management, analytics and reporting, permitting, engineering, and more.
For Svetlana’s internship, she joined the Wired Engineering Drafting and Design team. Svetlana is currently an Architectural Drafting AAS student at Atlanta Technical College and earned her CAD Operator and Architectural Systems Drafter certification this past spring. For her internship with Tilson, she remotely assists with projects in Ohio, Arizona, and Nevada, analyzing GIS data and satellite imagery to import property lines, utility lines, and manholes into construction designs. She helps make sure any trenching or drilling for fiber lines is a safe distance from underground utilities.
Her favorite project has been creating construction drawings for the Las Vegas market. “I can apply my CAD skills and surveying knowledge to ensure the safe and accurate location of work needed for broadband fiber deployment,” Svetlana said. “The Tilson Summer Internship fits my skillset and work ethic.”
Beyond the technical skills she has acquired during her internship, Svetlana says the most important thing she has learned at Tilson has been “the importance of teamwork, transparency, and accountability.”
“My internship experience at Tilson is the greatest thing that ever happened to me,” she said. “It has met all my expectations. I feel included in daily team discussion and collaboration meetings; all my questions and concerns are answered in a professional and timely fashion.”
In addition to her Tilson internship, Svetlana is also taking a surveying class over the summer. Her goal is to pursue a civil engineering degree as her next step.
In her free time, Svetlana enjoys going for long drives in the countryside, studying, reading, shopping, and playing with her two sons, Michael and Stephen. She also has two cats; a Maine coon named Roberto and a calico named Cheerio.
Fun fact: Svetlana has recently taken up gardening as a new hobby. As part of her newfound interest, she has been successfully growing two avocado trees in her kitchen.
