Tilson & SkillBridge: Transitioning Service Members Support Tilson’s Mission to Build America’s Information Infrastructure

In November 2019, Tilson created its first SkillBridge internship program and partnership with the United States Department of Defense (DoD). The SkillBridge program is a win for companies and transitioning Active Duty Service Members (SMs). With approval from their command, SMs have an opportunity to intern or train with a company during their last 180 days of active service prior to transitioning to civilian life. SMs also retain their full military salary during their SkillBridge time, making the program high value but lower cost to a future employer. At Tilson, SkillBridge interns gain valuable civilian work experience in the telecommunications sector while applying their service experience during the three-to-six-month internship. At the end of the program, many in the program move into full-time mid-level or management roles. As a veteran-led company with a large proportion of veteran employees, Tilson understands challenges with the transitioning process and provides a welcoming and supportive environment, offers paid military leave for Reserve and National Guard members, actively hires veterans and military spouses, and participates in internship, job placement, and apprenticeship programs for veterans and active-duty service members.

What does a SkillBridge internship at Tilson look like?

Any service and any rank, enlisted or officer, within 180 days of release from military service is eligible to participate in the program. Since SMs end of service dates and locations vary, Tilson accepts interns all year round and offers on-site and remote internships with travel opportunities for those who haven’t tired of it just yet from their time in the military. The goal is to help you learn and transition to a civilian role while also leaning on your specialized skills and insights from previous military roles. Annually, selected SkillBridge interns share a presentation about themselves and their military career with leaders across Tilson. Successful SkillBridge interns who are ready to help Tilson on its mission are invited to join the Tilson Team at the end of their internship.

“Being a veteran at Tilson has helped with my transition into the civilian workforce. The company culture is not only inviting, but it is also very familiar. My skills from service translate very well into my work with the HR team at Tilson and I am learning a lot from the HR team and leadership.” Jessica Arellano, U.S. Marine Corps, SkillBridge Intern on Tilson’s HR Team

Veteran benefits at Tilson

As a veteran-led company, Tilson is proud to recruit, hire, promote, and support our active military members, veterans, and their spouses. Along with competitive health benefits, 401k matching, generous PTO and paid holidays (including Veterans Day), and paid parental leave policies, Tilson offers additional benefits for service members and veterans.

Tilson is a proud participant in the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) program, supporting our National Guard and Reserve team members who continue to serve our great nation. Members of the Reserve and National Guard receive 15 days fully paid military leave each year.
In addition to the SkillBridge program, Tilson partners with multiple organizations that share our values to provide job placement and skills training for veteran employees and their families. We also participate in the Telecommunications Industry Registered Apprenticeship Program (TIRAP) to help employees obtain the skills needed to join one of the fastest growing fields in the nation.

With a high proportion of veteran employees from all services, you’ll find a familiar and understanding culture of excellence in all we do on our mission to build America’s information infrastructure.

“For me it just feels like a natural fit. There are so many veterans around the company, and it has helped as a veteran to gain a sense of belonging. It seems to have helped foster camaraderie inside the company.” Joseph Stanley, U.S. Air Force, SkillBridge Intern on Tilson’s Safety Team

Recognized in 2022 for the 12th consecutive year on the Inc. 5000 list of the nation’s fastest growing private companies, Tilson is quickly expanding its workforce across America. Through our DoD SkillBridge program participation, paid leave policies and benefits, and supportive culture, our aim is to attract and retain service members who we believe bring unique talents and skillsets to our work.
